Jennie Sweet-CushmanPolitical Scientist · Educator

About

Scholarship grounded in public life

I study politics because I care about how people experience it: who feels welcome, who steps forward, and how institutions can make participation possible.

My path

From politics in practice to political science

Before becoming a political scientist, I worked as a newspaper reporter, a congressional campaign manager, and a public affairs professional. Those experiences still inform the questions I ask about political ambition, representation, and democratic life.

I remain involved in elections, campaigns, and public service, bringing that practical perspective into my research and classrooms.

Research, teaching, and academic leadership

My academic work connects the study of American politics with the practice of democratic citizenship. I research gender and political behavior, mentor students, develop civic learning opportunities, and contribute to university governance.

Teaching and advising recognitions have been especially meaningful because they reflect work with students and colleagues.

A life beyond the syllabus

When I'm not thinking about politics (which, admittedly, isn't all that often), I enjoy yoga, Solidcore, hiking, cooking, reading, and traveling. I'm also learning Irish, which is an ongoing exercise in humility and persistence. I appreciate good food, good wine, and exploring new places, especially if they put me near a large body of water.

I'm mom to Chris (34), who lives in Chicago; Kaden (23), in Minot, North Dakota; and Brody (22), here in Pittsburgh. I also have a stepdaughter and two grandsons, Leo (4) and Jonah (2), who make being a grandmother one of my favorite roles.

Rounding out the family are three cats: WHEELZ (10), Rebel (6), and Justice (6). Yes, those are their real names. And yes, they have personalities to match.
